Born in Cleveland, Ohio, James Primosch studied at Cleveland State University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University.

Primosch has received many prestigious grants and awards, including a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Guggenheim Fellowship. His song cycle Holy the Firm was composed for and premiered by Dawn Upshaw, and he has served on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania since 1988.
