Text
Theology
by Paul Laurence Dunbar
There is a heaven, for ever, day by day,
The upward longing of my soul doth tell me so.
There is a hell, I’m quite sure; for pray,
If there were not, where would my neighbours go?
"Theology" is part of Betty Jackson King's song grouping A Set of Three Dunbar Poems. In Theology, King pairs the comical text with a soaring melody and accompaniment that sets up a plot twist and the punchline.
