We have loved the stars too deeply
To be afraid of the night.
Based upon an inscription found in Allegheny, Pennsylvania.
"The Astronomers" was written in New York City in September, 1959 and is included in Eight Songs, published by Boosey & Hawkes (1981). It is dedicated to Hundley's grandmother.
