Papa Above! (from op. 108)

Emily Dickinson was Arthur Farwell's favorite poet. During his sixties and seventies, he set thirty-nine of her poems to music. Thirty-four were published posthumously in Boosey & Hawkes' two-volume Thirty-Four Songs on Poems of Emily Dickinson by Arthur Farwell. "Papa Above!" is published in the second volume and was originally part of Farwell's 10 Emily Dickinson Songs, Op. 108.

Text

Papa Above!
by Emily Dickinson

Papa above!
Regard a Mouse
O’erpowered by the Cat!
Reserve within thy kingdom
A “Mansion” for the Rat!

Snug in seraphic Cupboards
To nibble all the day
While unsuspecting Cycles
Wheel solemnly away!
