Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Windham traveled to New York City on a Greyhound bus at the age of 19 and immediately began his literary life in the city. He collaborated with Tennessee Williams on his play You Touched Me! after Williams had already become famous from The Glass Menagerie.

Windham maintained friendships with many important cultural figures in America, from Alice B. Toklas to Forester. While he remained only a minor figure during the prime of his life, the significance of his novels and memoirs are recognized today and many are reprinted.
