About
Xavier de Callataÿ’s journal entries preserved his thoughts while completing The Symphony for Christine, a series of eleven paintings divided into four movements entitled, “Desire,” “Caring,” “Death,” and “Love.” Christine was a close friend of de Callataÿ whom he met while working as an artist in New Orleans. Her sudden suicide affected him greatly, and he was moved to spend six years completing this artistic tribute to her.
Charles S. Brown’s song settings use text from de Callataÿ’s journal entries that were written while the painter was working on The Symphony for Christine. Each song corresponds to the four movements that de Callataÿ created: “Desire,” “Caring,” “Death,” and “Love.” At this time, both “Desire” and “Caring” have been published in An Anthology of African and African Diaspora Songs.
