Charles Sprague was a scientist as well as a poet, and he was the son of the famous poet Charles Sprague.

Born in Boston, Charles James Sprague was a botanist, eventually becoming a curator at the Boston Society of Natural History. His collection of lichens is of particular note.

Sprague’s text has been set by Charles Ives in “The Indians,” the 14th song of Ives’s song collection 114 Songs.
