About

Not only did Piper collect folksongs from around the United States, but he also collected folk sayings, rhymes, riddles, games, and quadrille cards. More information about his collection can be found at the link to the right. According to the University of Iowa, Piper preserved 828 American folksongs, many of which were later included in Carl Sandburg’s American Songbag.

Piper was also a poet and writer himself. Some of his poetry collections include Barbed Wire and Other Poems (1917) and Paintrock Road (1927).
