Ritter was not only a composer but often wrote about music. The French-born composer immigrated to the United States when he was 23 years old. His expansive music library, which included major treatises and many European works, immigrated with him and was notable for the time and for his young age.

Ritter was also a devoted teacher and taught at Vassar College for most of his mature life.
