Born in Los Angeles, Erica Muhl grew up in a musical family and had the chance to study with Nadia Boulanger in Paris at the age of sixteen. After finishing her undergraduate studies in California, Muhl returned to Europe, this time to study in Italy with Franco Donatoni. She earned her D.M.A. from the University of Southern California in 1991.

Muhl credits Morten Lauridsen as her primary mentor. She has served as the Assistant Conductor for the Los Angeles Opera Theater, Seattle Opera and the Pacific Northwest Wagner Festival’s complete Der Ring des Nibelungen. Muhl currently serves as a Professor of Composition at the University of Southern California.
